ORGANIK ROCKA - UK

Self-proclaimed misfits with a dream to "make the revolutionaries look superfly", Organik Rocka is a refreshing brand in the fashion industry. As a collective, they aim to bring out east London cool in ethical bamboo tshirts,which from the looks of their latest collection "demo" is very likely.  I became a bit fascinated with the solgans slashed across their tshirts like "work, buy consume, die", which, quite frankly, describes the people in the western world today. Kay from the team was kind enough to answer a few questions.. 

Why did you decide to create a label? 

At the time of creating Organik Rocka, we could not find top quality ethical/organic tees that had rockin designs or text. The brands that were out there, were kinda boring,so we decided to do our own.

Would you ever consider branching out into other aspects of the fashion industry? 

We are spontaneous, so we do what we do when we feel like doing it.

What inspired your latest range? 

Chocolate, dance, music, sex, romance - in no particular order.

You are a very political/ethical label how do you intend to portray that through your clothes?

Are we very political??? I suppose being that all aspects of modern living is politics - then I guess we are. I think the clothes speak for themselves!  

Will your next range have the same background?

The misfits that make up Organik Rocka are not tied to only one thing - so god only knows!

Do you think fashion can change the world for better?

Hell yeah!!! And at the very least, we can make the revolutionaries look superfly!!!

 Organik Rocka's clothes are perfect for the shy person in all of us and allow everyone to express their opinions through their clothes. My favourite design is the "work buy" tshirt which retails for £32, it's simple yet still gets peoples attention, once again proving that less is sometimes more. THE REBIRTH OF THE RIOT GRRRL

For you guys who don't know what a riot grrrl is (don't worry I didn't for ages):

Riot grrrl is an underground feminist punk rock movement that originally started in the early to mid-1990s, in Washington, DC and the greater Pacific Northwest, especially Olympia, Washington and Portland, Oregon. It is often associated with third-wave feminism which is sometimes seen as its starting point.

There has always been an underground for punky feminist girls in the western world, but it managed to make it to the mainstream in the 90's with bands such as Bikini Kill, L7 and Sleater-Kinney. This third-wave feminism sparked a new generation of alternative girls who serve as an inspiration for many to this day. For instance, if there had never been bands like L7 with the coolest bass player of all time (Jennifer Finch) I doubt that the chick bass player in school of rock would have been a chick and without her I would have never even thought of picking up a bass. However, in recent years this wave of radical feminism has slipped into the background and women's rights have taken the backseat. Unfortunately this has resulted in a new form of "acceptable sexism" putting women at the butt of misogynistic jokes about getting back into the kitchen once again. Quite frankly I could not think of a better time for something so serious to become trendy. Sure it must be annoying for some people to hear impressionable youths declaring their status to the world as a feminist when they haven't even studied the fundamentals as hard as you did, but can you really say that promoting equality into the mainstream is a bad thing?

The increase of girls choosing to not shave their armpits in the name of feminism is major, although this may seem disgusting to some I think it's quite a good choice no matter how unconventional it is. I suppose the reason why i'm so supportive of people like this is because I am pretty much a slave to the razor, I've always had it drilled into my head that body hair is disgusting when really it's natural and the more people we see embracing that promotes a better attitude to women's bodies everywhere and the choices they make. However, even if there are more girls throwing out their bics there is no doubt that the everyday persons point of view on how a woman should look is still pretty deformed, with the easy access to porn and sexualisation of almost everything in the media it's not really a surprise.

One of the more interesting things about the modern riot grrrl has to be the way in which they function. Although it was only 20 years ago our society and the way it functions has changed greatly since the end of the twentieth century, for instance, the internet. It is no longer necessary for people to make zines and hide their opinion on certain subjects when you have tumblr, twitter and whatever else is out there. The new riot grrrl isn't an underground scene but more of a nostalgic trend, founded by the girls and boys that were just a bit too young to know what it meant before.

Unfortunately, I would not be surprised if this revival is short lived like so many other things these days, not to mention the fact that it's probably going to become some sort of joke for those that piss everyone off. If you're a riot grrrl keep riot grrrling, you guys are cool. B.x

AN ALTERNATIVE TO FUCK OFF.

I always find myself totally lost for words whenever there is some sort of verbal confrontation, partly because I don't really like getting into arguments with people, but mostly because I'm very very slow. Don't get me wrong, I do have my moments where sass takes over me and I can totally belittle people with my words, but I usually tend to get these great insults a few hours later when I'm in bed trying to get some sleep.  My solution for this reoccurring problem is to create a facade by dressing with sass, wit and a little bit of attitude.

OUTFIT No.1

 I think it's pretty apparent that this outfit is inspired by the classic movie Heathers, because quite frankly, I couldn't think of a better group of girls to personify the two words "fuck off". I think my favourite thing in this mood-board (is that the right word?? I'm not very pro with these things) has to be the Houndstooth jacket. If you think about it, the jacket alone is pretty intimidating, first of all its called HOUNDSTOOTH, the print itself is totally confrontational and kind of looks like loads of sharp objects and then there is the shoulder pads which basically make anyone look tough. Speaking of being tough, this red leather skirt is the love of my life in skirt form. I think it's necessity if you're looking to use sass to kick-ass. The pleats make it look very cute and innocent but also allow great leg room if you ever need to kick your opponent. As for shoes I think that flats are imperative if you're planning on telling your nemesis where it's at. Running heels isn't flattering or convenient, especially if you're trying to save yourself from a beating.

OUTFIT No.2 

My love for all things funky, groovy and disco is unfathomable, so you can imagine how pissed I was when I couldn't find a pair of gold flares to complete this ensemble. Unfortunately the look didn't turn out as studio 54 as I wanted it to but I still think it could give the intended message. Gold is the main colour here, simply because it's the colour of POWER! I think you could win any argument in this outfit, granted, you could be a bit vulnerable in a black bandeau but why not see it as an opportunity to show who's in control, of not only your body but what ever circumstance you're in as well? Rainbow print doesn't get enough credit these days which is a shame because it's so fun and versatile because it has literally got all colours of the rainbow in it . If you still don't feel safe from your enemy in loud prints and tight trousers, just get physical and use the chunky jewelry and mad platforms as weapons (only as protection though).

OUTFIT No.3
  

For my last 'alternative to fuck off', I decided to seek inspiration in one of my favourite idols, Annie Lennox. I tried as hard as I could to imitate her look from the music video for Sisters are doin' it for themselves because not only does she look bad ass in it, but the song is all about standing up and fighting for what you believe in. Even though the look is pretty androgynous I think that you can still look really feminine if you want to, adding red shoes for example is a pop of colour that most people wouldn't think to make when wearing a trouser suit, but it still looks amazing even if it isn't "the norm". Once again, we see the shoulder pads, I don't think you really need to say much when you're wearing something that's called a 'power-shoulder', but if you are involved in some sort of confrontation, they definitely act as great protection if you need to barge into someone. I'm also really into the high-waisted peg trousers, sadly these days most people shy away from a trouser which isn't skinny, harem or chino, which makes it all the more intimidating! The way I see it, by wearing these trousers you can change loads of peoples minds, and if they find your clothes cool, they're going to find your side of the argument cool as well*. 

For me, dressing like this can be very therapeutic, it's never nice to have a confrontation with someone but sometimes it can seem necessary. Sending messages with your clothes is a fun alternative to something that is usually quite stressful and altogether nasty and has been going on forever, even in nature. Think of yourself as a tarantula, terrifying to look at but lacking in venom. I sincerely hope you manage to put your rival in their place and kick butt! B.x

LOLA, 17.

A cute girl with a passion for metal tshirts seems to be the only way to describe Lola, she has an effortless look that never ceases to be stylish, fun and personifies not caring about what people may say. I suppose one of the best things about Lola has to be the simple clarity she has of the world, which I think comes out in the following discourse. Lola was a pleasure to interview and I hope she is just as lovely to read.. 

How would you describe your style?

Um well, I like to blend stuff. Like, I like Japanese street fashion and then I just wear band tshirts because I wanna show off my music taste. And then I just take my dads clothes because he has all these stussy tshirts and stuff

Your dad is stylish! 

Mhmm, he gave them all to me, so it's pretty great. 

Have you always dressed like this, or is this a new look for you? 

Well, I was really emo until like year 9 and then in year 10 I went, not indie but I wore lots if flowers and stuff like that and then it turned into this around year 11, just mixing stuff together. 

That's cool! So would you say that your style is quite individual?

I don't think so, I think I wear what everyone else wears.

Really? I think you dress quite originally! 

Thank you! It's kind of that I don't want to wear just street stuff or just band stuff and I don't want to look too much like a greasy metal-head so I wear pink cardigans and stuff.

How do you pick your band tshirts? Are they like your favourite bands or does it have to be a cool design? 

It has to be cool!! I love some bands but I know they're shit so I don't buy their tshirts, like I love You Me At Six but I'm not going to buy their tshirts because I know people would judge me as some scene kid.

Do you think that kind of thing happens to a lot of people? 

Yeah probably. People are always like "I don't care what you think" but wont say what they listen to. I don't think people would show their guilty pleasures and wear a tshirt with that on it.

Yeah, I can't find an east 17 tshirt anywhere so i'm kind of fucked...Have you noticed any particular trends that you've been interested in recently? 

No, not really. I've noticed that most people in Cotham wear highwaisted jeans and I was like "ooh those look nice!" so I bought some and now I wear them all the time. But that's about it. 

Have you got any fashion inspiration?

Like people? I kind of do but I don't copy them. I love what Alice Glass from crystal castles wears and Yolandi Visser from Die Antwoord. I love what she wears, I mean I obviously wouldn't wear that in the street but I still love it. 

What do you think of this whole 90's revival thing that's knocking about? 

I can never tell what stuff is from what decade, like I have no idea what is from 90's or 80's.

What advice would you give to someone starting college who's worried about their image?

Probably just that you don't have to wear loads of different clothes, you can just mix things together. Also, if you think colours don't really go it doesn't really matter, because I think that pretty much all colours go together, I don't really have any colour coordination. But yeah, don't  go out and buy loads of clothes just buy a few things that you really like that you can wear all the time because no one really cares.

CURRENT FAVES PT. 4

FASHION

           
I have to be honest with y'all, I've paid hardly any attention to the SS13 collections, so my apologies if this section isn't up to your standards. Out of the very few collections I did see, my favourite has to be the Mugler womens wear, designed by Nicola Formichetti and Sébastien Peigné. I love the use of leather and bright colours that really shake up the rather smart cut clothes. That said, the 'smart-cut clothes' are completely revolutionary in my opinion, the inventive use of bicycle shorts instead of a tight miniskirt flatters the peplum-ish cut to most of the tops. I want to own almost everything from this collection, please Nicola Formichetti ditch lady gaga and style me!!!! 
It pains me to say that my most beloved purchases recently have to be this black backpack for school and my black Adidas campus. It's even more painful to say that I like my backpack more than my trainers because I wanted them for ages. I don't think you can do the trusty backpack justice in mere words, you'll just have to get one yourself. I have a Jansport one by the way, if you really care. 
As for accessories, I've been getting into chokers especially the ones from this etsy store called Twirly Trinkets. It's all handmade with a wide array of different charms that could go with basically any look. It's also really well priced so go check it out now if you're clever.

FILM

Well, I have seen a few of the films at the cinema recently but I have to say, I was quite disappointed. If you haven't seen Life of Pi yet I wouldn't be too worried because it is extremely overrated. Also, if you are like me and a weird phobia of sea creatures, stay away from this film at all costs. There are sharks and fishes all over the place and it's not cool in any way. On the other hand, I watched this super great six-part series of short films called, Paris vu par (1965). Each short film is about 15-20 minutes long and directed by different directors such as Jean-Luc Goddard and Claude Chabrol. Even though some of the films look at rather dark subjects, it's altogether very lighthearted. French film from this era is always really good and it's usually very simple, so if you're one of those ignorant people who think that all foreign film is shit, then I recommend that you stop being such an idiot and start watching world cinema with something like this. I do have to thank mumsie for showing me this one and I should probably thank pops as well for being French, without which I would probably be one of those ignorant teenage types.

MUSIC
                                

Before you get excited, the songs on this playlist are mostly oldish because unfortunately for me I have this idea embedded into my mind that all new music is rubbish, which is a total burden in my opinion. Anyways, the new music I do like is on there e.g. Mac DeMarco - this Canadian guy  that writes the best guitar music in the 21st century. If any of you are like me and enjoy listening to music that doesn't judge them for feeling sorry for themselves, then this is your guy. Most of his songs on the new album '2' are about things like cigarettes and chicks, rather than the mopey shit that young indie people tend to sing about these days. Beliefs & Waxahatchee are other new bands that I really like, so I guess these last few months haven't been too bad for newer music and me. Beliefs are another new Canadian band (Canada has good music at the mo innit?) who are totally great because they have a bit of an R.E.M vibe about them, who I've also been listening to a lot recently. In a nutshell, the music I've been listening to lately is the sort of stuff you can switch off to, I don't really think you can enjoy music if you have to concentrate on it all the time.

I suppose that's all the stuff I've really loved recently - these last few months have been very very boring. B.x

One of the best things about these interviews is the fact that each time I stop recording what they have to say, I feel like I've made a new friend, something I love to do. Alice was someone that I wanted to interview from the first time I saw her, but from previous experience, I understand that it is a bit odd when a strangers asks to take photos of you and then ask you a load of questions and now it's great because I have a new friend and really good interview!

How would you describe your style?
Hmmm.... I don't know. Sometimes it's really childish, like sometimes I dress like a ten year-old like, a lot of the time. But most of the time it's just comfy.
..The way it should be. Do you have any particular style icons?

Not particularly. Do you know Claire Boucher, Grimes? 

Yeah!! 

Yeah, some of her clothes are really nice, but then some of them are really crazy and she just looks like she has just taken a net and draped it around herself. But yeah, partly her.

Definitely. Your style is really cool and.. not really different but you've got your own style. Have you always been like this or would you say it's come with age?

I would like to say that's it's a coming of age thing but it's not really, because I can always remember in like year 7 being like "guys, guys I don't have any jeans" and then everyone would be like "what do you wear?!", so I would just go around in corduroys. It was a bad time. 

But corduroys are cool! I have a pair now and they're my funnest trousers I think..

But are they corduroy flares? 

No, but I did have a pair of purple ones..

I was all about the flares.. 

Exactly, but I did throw them out when I got into year 6. So, do you think that when you're younger (because I definitely do), you feel more like you have to dress in a certain way, then you do when you're older? Like in college, do you feel that because you wear your own clothes everyday you have to dress in particular way, or do you just wear what you want?

I think it definitely used to be like that, like in secondary school, because there was that whole thing about being part of a group and that like, if you wear certain things you can be a part of the group but if you don't you can't be in that group at all. But now I feel that it doesn't really have anything to do with what you wear, like in 6th form. I mean people still get impressions about you from what you wear, like if someone came in one day dressed as a marshmellow people would be like "weirdo, stay away"

It's funny now that weird clothes are becoming more trendy now so that could happen soon.. 

That's true. 

Do you have any idea of what could come next - fashion wise?

Not really, to be honest. I hope that it's big things, like baggy clothes. I like big clothes.

That's good - word on the street is baggy jeans are slowly making a comeback. Where do you get most of your clothes? They're all very cool..

Thank you! I guess a lot of the time it's like charity shops and jumble sales, because i'm a complete cheapskate. But I recently got a job and I don't know what to do with all this money, because it used to be that I couldn't afford to go into places like Zara or Topshop and I quite like them but I wouldn't buy much. It's still cool though to be able to walk around them and be like "yeah...I could buy that" and then just walk away. 

So do you think you're going to buy more highstreet clothes? Not that charity shops aren't highstreet!! 

Hahah! The low-end of the highstreet. Well, I don't know really because I find it strange that if it's in a highstreet shop then it's been approved by however many people and I think I heard one time that if you buy something from a highstreet shop there are gonna be about 200 people in the country that have the same thing at least. It obviously varies on shop, but I think that's slightly put me off, but it does depend what they've got really. 

What has been your favourite trend of 2012?

I'm not really sure about trends but I know that my favourite thing that I bought was my dungaree dress. I like how that makes me feel quite 10 year-old ish, but in a decent way. But trends wise i'm not really that sure. Mainly because I have a really bad memory. But one direction was annoyed me quite a bit, because all the boys would be in chinos and hoodies or topman jumpers with elbow patches. It's annoying because I quite like the patches it's just when it's a group of people and they're all wearing the same thing it's just like no, you're not one direction.

MY DISLIKES PT.2

Where do I begin? I can't tell if it's the miserable weather, but it seems that there are endless lists of things that I don't like recently, ranging from clothes to celebrities. Before you start to read this though, I hope that however fond of this blog/me you are that my opinions don't harm you in any way, so please read this with caution. Without further a due, here's some more things about me...

1. PEOPLE RESORTING TO VIOLENCE
I was recently in somewhat of a minor altercation (I really do mean very minor) that ended in things turning nasty. Luckily I didn't really retaliate in this unfortunate situation, I don't really know if it was because I was shocked or because I didn't really care. Either way, I feel proud of myself for not really getting involved because it just seemed a bit stupid. I feel the same about almost anything that involves using violence as a mean of persuasion, for instance I think the world would be a better place if we didn't have any armies. I suppose that sounds a bit radical but if you think it's logical that we shouldn't have any nuclear weapons which we use to kill people, then surely we shouldn't have any people that we use to kill people. I don't think that there is very much else that I can say on the matter other than, the whole violence shambles is very very stupid and if it makes sense to you to use it as a means of communicating your anger I feel sorry for you.

2. KATY PERRY
I always thought that she was one of the cooler popstars but after reading this article, she just became another stupid human that had been given a voice and used it badly. That said, she can't be the only one to blame for making such a soul-crushing statement in the modern day as the article shows us. It makes me sad to hear such influential people say things that I find rather disrespectful to not only a few people but a whole gender. I suppose that proves that we can't really rely on celebrities as a solid role model, I mean Chuck Norris, hero for many, is an uber-republican that is quite happy to discuss his anti-gay points of view, which is quite frankly, disgusting. 

3. THE NOROVIRUS 
I suppose this section isn't for those with a weak stomach, because my story is rather disgusting to say the least. It all started 2 days before Christmas day when my mammer (mum to you normal folk) came home from work complaining about feeling sick, I sympathized as usual and then continued to do my thang on the web, like every teenager in the 21st century. Later on in the night I could hear this retching coming from her room, rather than going in and having to see something horrid and potentially get the virus myself I lovingly shouted from outside the door to see if she was alright and offered to get an ambulance. Anyways, all was good in the hood and Christmas day went to plan until just after 6 when we had got back from a walk. I thought I was about to pass out so I was like "guys I need to go and have a bath". I slowly made it up the stairs and to the bathroom where I turned on the tap for the bath and then ran to the toilet and spent the rest of the evening there throwing up my christmas dinner. Yes, I definitely had one of the worst christmas holidays ever. So, if any of you are doctors or scientists I urge you to find some sort of vaccination ASAP. I also couldn't eat for 3 whole days which isn't fun for someone like me. 

4.MIDI-SKIRTS
I don't care if they're what is hip on the high-street they look impractical and in my opinion rather unflattering. Unless you are trying to go for a vintage look, I would rather that you all left them on the rack. Howbeit, I have seen one or two people pull of a midi-skirt but that has been when they have used it to compliment their own style. Maybe it's just my inner-hipster that's telling me not to like what's trendy. Gah.

FASHION.

Sitting here with a friend talking about why I don't write enough on wewantshops really has seemed to be the kick up the arse I needed. So, with very little inspiration at the moment, I've decided to write a little post about my general opinion when it comes to fashion.

"Fashion should be run by the people, not the designers." - Me, 3rd January 2012, 17:15

I suppose what i'm trying to say by putting this statement out there is, it's been too long that we've been told what is ok to wear and what isn't. Sooner or later what we know as individual becomes the norm. I've never really sought an answer for this phenomenon, but it all becomes clear when you think about it. The fashion industry has a grasp over social norms that is greater than anything else, they make their money by telling people what is "cool" and then changing it on a regular basis. That said, the world would be a very boring place if it wasn't constantly changing.

I often wonder if maybe people would have a different outlook on appearance if we didn't dedicate so much time and money to the fashion world, I mean would a size 2 still be every girls dream? Or would our mind and knowledge be more important? Shen believes that it's harder to be happy in society if you're not considered beautiful. To a certain degree he is right but he is "beautiful" (in his own words) so he would say that. I believe on the other hand, that  you can be content with your appearance whether you are hot or not, unlike Karl Lagerfeld  who is well known for having a harsh view on aesthetic images.

So why do we let him have such a large influence on lifestyle choices? Why do we allow an old man to tell us what is an ok size to be? The answer is quite simple really, we've allowed him to have such a reputation that he is now known as the best. He is the man that we go to for advice when it comes to fashion and we let him make statements that crush self-esteems around the world.

In conclusion, I want to see more people wearing what they like rather than what is trendy. B.x

EVERYDAY BILL.

When trying to come up with an idea for day 2 of Billie week, I received a rather life changing comment from someone. I wont lie, it hurt, who could have thought that 8 little words could do so much damage to my fragile self-consciousness. If you haven't guessed it already, I was told that I was the most mainstream girl that said person knew. It was like a dagger to the little place dedicated in my fragile heart to my passion for fashion. Anyways, I had a lot to think about after hearing that and came to the conclusion that if others were going to consider me mainstream, I would just have to embrace it and what better way would there be that showing you all my everyday, as hard as it may be to say, mainstream look.

If you can bear to look at the pictures above you'll see the layers that consist of today's outfit. Rather boring I must admit, but I can't give up much of the precious 20 minutes that I have each morning before I leave the flat. If you would please direct your eyes to the first image, you'll see me, staring down at my tshirt as if it's the most interesting thing in the world (it's not, but if you pull your top down like so it makes you look a lot slimmer). I was given this top by my sister about a year ago and I've loved it ever since, I would definitely say that it's one of my staple tshirts, even if I don't wear it enough. Now, as you start to look towards the foot of the image, you'll see black tights and a black H&M mini skirt, essential to every wardrobe. There's not much else I can say about them, because they are so important to own.

In the next image, you'll see the same outfit but with a little addition. I can't tell you how long I've been trying to style this baby but I suppose today was my lucky day and I had the genius idea of going really basic for once (as basic as I can go). I suppose when I decided to put this baggy tank top on, I was trying to go for the female Morrissey* look, without coming off as extremely pretentious.

Onto the third and final picture, you can see the most crucial items of my wardrobe, my beloved coat and boots. I honestly don't know what I would do without them because I do literally wear at least one of them every day. Neither are particularly attractive, but they do make my outfits mine and not just any old cliché. That said, I don't think that everyday people pay that much attention to what I wear, but it would be a lie to say that I don't make any effort, so to those who notice my clothes, thank you. B.x

A TASTE OF THE BILLIE PIE.

I know I've been absent for a ridiculous amount of time but, fear not! I have returned! You guys are in for a treat this next week, for this week is dedicated to the one and only me (hence the cringe-worthy title). Of course the main focus will be fashion, but I guess you are all familiar enough with me by now to know that I do go on a bit.  As you all already know (I hope), one of my favourite things to do on this blog is interview my friends and family about the way they style/dress themselves. I think it really does connect the real world with the fashion industry, I want you to consider me as a young Morrissey*, doing the most ordinary thing because it's time ordinary people spoke out. Well, I thought if this week is about me, why not interview myself?....

How would you describe your style?

Ever changing, I don't feel that I could ever really brand myself with one sort 'style'. I don't really believe that we have to stick to one sort of trend anymore, which is great for me because I don't think I would be very accepted otherwise.

Do you have any style icons?

The thing is, I don't really have style icons, because I find everything very inspiring when it comes to fashion I can never really fixate on one or two people. For instance, I find music can have an extreme affect on my wardrobe, which I know sounds extremely pretentious but it's just one of my annoying habits. I also have little obsessions, like the club kids. 

Do you have any staple items of clothing? 

I'm a big coat person and I love my leather aviator coat that my dad gave me earlier this year and I absolutely adore my doc martens. I pretty much wear those two items everyday. They're not particularly glamorous, but neither am I. 

Are labels important to you?

I don't really hold much value to high street labels, I can tell the difference between them all, but I don't think it's necessary that if I'm going to get a pair of trainers that they have to be Nikes because quite frankly, I'm much happier to pay £20 less for a pair of dunlops. But top-end fashion is another story! I am in love with big labels like Chanel or Moschino and take time every season to look at their latest collections. 

Are there any shops you always go to?

Yes, if I'm ever shopping in town I always go into H&M and Zara, but more often than not I'll go into places like Sports Direct and Select, not because I'm sporty in any kind of way but I find that it's a really great place for pretty much anything. In short, I only really shop at the cheap ones, but not really Primark.
